When using the WiFi router (or access point), we rely on the existing standard.
All CTC modules operate only in the 2.4 GHz band. Nevertheless, a router with additional 5 GHz is worthwhile. Because if you connect your tablet or smartphone via 5 GHz to the router, you ensure that the communication is forced through the router, which often has the better radio connection to the CTC module.
We have had good experiences with the FritzBox 4040 , which we currently use for the CTC-Router . An older (used) FritzBox also works just as well. However, it usually boots much more sluggishly.
Experiments with Raspberry Pi with OpenWRT did not satisfy us and are hardly cheaper than the FritzBox 4040.
Experiments with the FritzBox 7170 showed that it gets tangled up in UDP communication after uploading config files. The status of the modules turned red. Only disconnecting the PC from the model railway WiFi and reconnecting it got the system running again. With a (newer) FritzBox 3272 , this problem did not occur.
