Turnouts with Dual-Coil Drive
The dual-coil drive is the standard drive in HO gauge, sometimes affectionately called “click-clack.” It consists of two electromagnets, one for each switching direction. It is connected with three cables: a common power supply and one control wire per electromagnet.
Note: Some dual-coil drives fail to switch or do so unreliably when reaching the end position. If operated with continuous current, the electromagnet burns out or fuses with plastic guides within seconds. Such damage is usually irreversible.

Motorised Turnouts (2-wire)
Drives featuring a motor that is controlled with inverted polarity depending on the switching direction. A special case here is the LGB turnout drive, which sounds like a twin-coil drive (click-click) but actually contains a motor.

Motorised Turnouts (3-wire)
Motor-driven turnouts allow for prototypically slow and smooth switching. To make replacing twin-coil drives as simple as possible, various manufacturers offer such turnouts with a three-wire connection.
